Breaking Free from Self-Doubt: Unlocking the Secret to Unshakeable Confidence
Self-doubt has been a familiar companion in my journey as a writer, especially when I stepped out to share my faith and spread God’s Word. It sneaks in quietly, whispering questions about my adequacy for the work before me.
It’s hard not to notice those thriving in their paths—authors whose books are topping charts, posts garnering thousands of likes, and communities buzzing with engagement.
I am grateful for the small but precious group of readers who encourage me in quiet, meaningful ways—through heartfelt emails, kind words, and even simple gestures of support by consistently reading my work. They are like jewels in a treasured chest and their encouragement assures me that my work matters.
Yet even in the glow of their kindness, the nagging voice of self-doubt often returns: “Yes, you’re good…but just not good enough.” There have been moments when discouragement overwhelmed me and I found myself asking, “What’s the point of all this?”
If you’ve ever felt this way, you know the emotional roller coaster: soaring with hope one moment, then plunging into uncertainty the next. I realised I couldn’t stay on this exhausting ride forever, so I turned to God, asking for clarity and peace to anchor me.
Through His Word and the whispers of the Holy Spirit, God began to reveal a powerful truth:
This life I have, the work I do— is not about me.
When I gave my life to Jesus and chose to follow Him, everything shifted. My life, my work and my purpose were no longer about achieving success or seeking recognition for myself. Instead, it calls for a life centred on something far greater—serving Him.
While encouragement from others is still a blessing, a gift to be cherished, it’s not the foundation of my self-confidence. Relying on human affirmation is like trying to fill a jar with holes—it’s never enough. And when the encouragement fades or doesn’t come at all, self-doubt quickly slips back in, threatening to undo everything.
God reminded me to draw my confidence from one unchanging truth instead: He chose me and He called me to do this work for Him.
Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last” (John 15:16, NIV).
If God has called you to do something, it’s because He sees you as perfectly equipped for it. That alone should be enough to quiet the doubts.
Think of the first disciples. They weren’t scholars, rabbis or men of influence. They were ordinary fishermen, called out of their everyday lives to follow Jesus and become “fishers of people” (Matthew 4:19, NASB). They faced rejection, imprisonment, and suffering, but they pressed on. Not because of earthly recognition, but because they were confident in the One who had called them.
Their strength didn’t come from the approval of others or the social media metrics we often use to measure success today. It came from their faith in Jesus and their commitment to fulfilling the mission He gave them. Paul reminds us, “Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God” (2 Corinthians 3:5, NIV).
So, I’m sharing this with you as much as I’m reminding myself: When you commit your life and work to God—not for the applause of others but for His glory—everything changes. He replaces the weight of self-doubt with the assurance of His calling.
When your focus shifts from chasing validation to seeking His delight, you’ll find a peace that steadies your heart and a strength that grounds your steps.
If you’re struggling with self-doubt today, remember this: God chose you. He called you to this path for a purpose. Lean on Him and let His approval be your anchor.
As you strive to honour Him, He will pour into you the unshakable confidence to persevere and bear fruit that will last.
Father God, thank You for choosing me and equipping me for Your work. When self-doubt clouds my heart, help me to rest in Your calling and find my confidence in You. Guide my steps, renew my strength, and let my work bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
God’s Promise
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
— Isaiah 40:31 (NLT)
My Everyday Promise
I will trust not in myself or my abilities, but in You, Lord, making You the centre of everything I do.
